Text Neck

"Text Neck" is the term used to describe negative impacts of mobile phone use for prolonged periods of time in the flexed neck position. Many studies have demonstrated a significant positive correlation between the duration of mobile phone use and neck/shoulder pain.

The human head weighs around 5 kg, as the neck flexes forward and down to look at a mobile device, the weight on the cervical spine begins to increase with the gravitational pull bringing the neck out of alignment with the spine and shoulders.. When the neck begins to bend a 15 degree angle, the weight on the spine more than doubles to 12 kg. At a 30 degree angle the weight increases to 18 Kg, at 45 degrees it's 22 kg, and at 60 degrees the cervical spine is loaded with 27 kg.

Are you looking down at your phone reading this right now?

The purpose of the neck is to support the weight and movement of the head whilst working with the T-spine and pectoral arch. Prolonged use of mobile devices compromises this unity spawning strain, tension and fatigue that will worsen the longer the problem isn't addressed.

Studies have shown that every inch the head moves forward it adds an additional weight of 4-5 kg to your neck and shoulders. The average person spends 3 hours looking down at their phone (most commonly at a 45 degree angle), now multiply that 22kg on your neck by 3 for 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year.
