Levator Scapulae 'Knot' Myth
At least 75% of new clients always ask why they have a knot in their neck (the area around the point of my elbow in the first image).
This region of the body is the levator scapulae, a muscle in the neck which many of my client's have problems with.
The 'knot' in this area isn't actually a knot at all, but a twist in the muscle fibres.
As you can see in the second image the levator scapulae attaches at the cervical spine and the scapular.
When this area is massaged, the twist in the muscle fibres can feel like a knot that never breaks down. And it won't, it's meant to be that way.
The function of the levator scapulae is to lift the scapula located at the back of the shoulder. The muscle is in constant use throughout the day so it's no surprise that it gets tight and sore, especially if you carry a bag on your shoulders or have a rounded posture at your desk.
Maintenance is important to keep this muscle balanced and functional through exercise, stretch, rest and massage.
